Pourtant, en privé, l'homme se définissait comme un poète avant tout, un poète solitaire et torturé, inspiré de la lecture de Keats, Shakespeare, Rilke et Rimbaud. Il publia Dans l'hiver des villes en 1956, mais sa célébrité en tant qu'auteur dramatique était déjà telle à l'époque qu'elle ne pouvait qu'éclipser son oeuvre poétique. Aujourd'hui, trente ans après sa mort, on comprend à la lecture de ce recueil combien ses vers et son sens poétique abreuvent tout son travail d'écriture, destiné ou non à être mis en scène. Aussi, ses poèmes sont-ils, à l'image de ses pièces, caractérisés par l'intensité de son expression, sa passion de la sincérité, son sentiment de solitude et sa compassion envers les marginaux. À une nuance près : ils apparaissent dans une certaine mesure comme une confession. Contrairement à son théâtre qui se voulait exempt de toute thématique ouvertement homosexuelle, il parvient ici, au moyen de conventions poétiques ou de formes libres, à rendre acceptable le récit de ses expériences avec les hommes, ou de son amour pour Frank Merlo - son compagnon de longue date. « Orphée sous les tropiques », Tennessee Williams écrivit ces poèmes dans le but d'exprimer sa sexualité propre, ce que le théâtre lui interdisait. « Quand les poètes deviennent délibérément des hommes de lettres, nous nous mettons à les lire avec davantage de respect que de plaisir », écrivait-il. La lecture de ce recueil, traduit avec talent par Jacques Demarcq, vient le contredire avec bonheur.
